On the last day of May, near the airport in Brest, Belarus, the sound of a puppy crying stopped people in their tracks. The cries were sharp and full of fear, impossible to ignore. Unsure of what was happening, those nearby called for help. What rescuers found moments later was heartbreaking.
A tiny puppy was stuck fast in a thick, black substance. His body was trapped, and he could barely move. The material clung to his fur and skin like glue. Firefighters and emergency workers realized the danger right away. The substance had hardened, and beneath the puppy, a hole had begun to form. If he slipped, he could disappear into it.
Freeing him took time and extreme care. For nearly an hour, rescuers worked slowly, afraid that one wrong move could make things worse. When they finally pulled him free, the puppy was exhausted, thirsty, and in pain. He couldn’t stand properly, and his condition was serious. But the hardest part was still ahead. The sticky substance covered much of his body and could not be removed easily.
That’s when volunteers from Kindness in Brest stepped forward. Working side by side with the rescue team, they gently used sunflower oil, warm water, and soft scrubbing to loosen the hardened material. It was careful, tiring work. The puppy had suffered dehydration, poisoning from the substance, and even broken bones in his paws and tail. Still, no one gave up on him.
By that evening, there were small signs of hope. The puppy managed to eat and drink a little. But his condition went up and down. The burns caused by the substance were painful, and when he tried to lick his paws, he became sick from ingesting the toxins. He vomited and stopped eating for a time. It was a fragile situation, but the people around him stayed.
Realizing they needed more help, the volunteers asked the community to step in. And they did. Neighbors arrived with buckets of warm water, shampoo, and soap. Over the next four days, many hands worked together, slowly washing away the last of the residue. With each session, the puppy became cleaner and stronger. His fur reappeared, and his body began to recover.
Then came the moment everyone hoped for. A local resident, touched by the puppy’s strength, chose to give him a home. He was named Lucky. In a warm, safe space filled with care, he began a new life. The fear and pain of those early days slowly faded.
No one knows exactly where the harmful substance came from. But what is clear is what followed. Firefighters, volunteers, and everyday people worked together to save a life. Lucky’s rescue shows what can happen when compassion leads the way.
Today, Lucky is doing well. His story continues to inspire those who hear it. From his cries by the roadside to the comfort of a loving home, his journey reminds us that kindness matters. When people come together, even the smallest life can be saved.
