Carlin Curtis was driving down a quiet road in Mississippi when she noticed something small moving near the edge of the pavement. She slowed down, unsure of what she was seeing. As she got closer, her heart dropped. A thin mother dog was crouched beside the road, pressing herself protectively around three tiny puppies. They were dirty, scared, and clearly alone. Someone had left them there, hoping they would survive on their own.
Carlin didn’t hesitate. As an independent rescue partner with Wright-Way Rescue, she had seen situations like this before. Still, each one hurt. The mother dog, later named Sugar, surprised her. Instead of running away, Sugar stepped forward. She was cautious, but there was trust in her eyes, as if she knew help had finally come.
Carlin gave Sugar food right away. The tired mom ate eagerly, her body desperate for strength after caring for her babies with almost nothing. While Sugar focused on eating, Carlin gently gathered the puppies and placed them into a large plastic tub she keeps in her car for emergencies just like this. The puppies curled together, quiet and worn out, finally able to rest.
Once her babies were safe, Sugar climbed into the back seat and lay down. For the first time in days, she relaxed. Her breathing slowed. The tension left her body. She had done everything she could for her puppies, and now someone else was taking over.
Soon after, the little family was placed into foster care. According to Wright-Way Rescue’s development director, JeriLynn Burks, they were healthy enough to move forward right away. Sugar’s foster family quickly fell in love with her calm, sweet nature. What started as temporary care soon became permanent. They chose to adopt her, giving Sugar the stable, loving home she had never known.
Her puppies — Bailey, Bree, and Burt — were taken to the rescue’s medical campus in Southern Illinois. At around two months old, they were bursting with energy and curiosity. One was a little shy, but all three were playful and eager to explore. After receiving medical care, including spay and neuter procedures, they began their recovery and social time, learning how to be happy, confident puppies.

As the weeks passed, the pups grew stronger and more comfortable with people, toys, and new surroundings. Vaccinations and playtime followed, opening the door to a future filled with walks, adventures, and loving families of their own.
Today, Sugar is thriving. She eats well, sleeps peacefully, and soaks up every bit of affection. The fear and struggle of life on the roadside are behind her. In their place is safety, warmth, and the comfort of belonging.
